Accordibng to the British Council, Empowering women and girls and achieving gender equality are crucial to creating inclusive, open and prosperous societies. Gender inequalities, however, persist in many countries so it is important that we find new ways of addressing this issue. We contribute to this agenda by creating opportunities for dialogue to influence policies that benefit women and girls; work with partners to promote access and opportunity for women and girls and build the skills and confidence of women and girls to achieve their potential and have more influence over decisions that affect their lives.
There has been considerable progress in recent decades in getting countries to acknowledge the importance of empowering women and girls, in order to promote greater equality in their relationships with men and boys, within their families and in society. While the international community recognises the important contribution gender equality can make to poverty reduction and inclusive growth, it also recognises that equality must be, above all, a matter of basic social justice
Stigmatization of women in leadership positions is a complex issue rooted in deeply ingrained societal and cultural biases. Women leaders often face stereotypes that undermine their credibility and effectiveness. These include:
The "Iron Lady" Stereotype:
This woman is often expected to be assertive and aggressive to be successful leaders, which can be seen as unfeminine and overzealous.
The "Emotional Woman" Stereotype:
The woman is usually perceived as overly emotional and unable to make rational decisions, leading to a lack of trust and respect.
The "Token Woman" Stereotype:
Sadly enough,Women in leadership positions are sometimes seen as tokens or symbols of diversity rather than being evaluated based on their qualifications and abilities.
The "Double Standard" Stereotype:
Whereby Women are often held to higher standards than men and are more likely to be criticized for their appearance or behavior.
These stereotypes can create a hostile work environment for women leaders and can limit their opportunities for advancement.
